What is physical AI?

A guide for businesses across the GCC.

Physical AI is artificial intelligence that works in the physical world. Instead of producing text or images on a screen, it runs inside machines that sense their surroundings, decide what to do and act on it. Robots that carry materials, inspect equipment, guide visitors or work on a construction site are all examples.

For businesses across the GCC, the question is no longer whether this technology exists. It is where it fits, what a first project looks like, and who can make it work on site.

How physical AI differs from software AI

Software AI processes information. It reads, writes, predicts and recommends. Physical AI has to do all of that and then move through a real space: uneven floors, heat and dust, people walking past, objects that are never exactly where the plan says.

That changes what matters. The model is only one part. The rest is the machine, the sensors, the site, the safety setup, the training of the people who work next to it, and the support after day one. A good robot in the wrong setting does not help anyone. This is why implementation matters as much as the technology itself.

Where physical AI is used

Physical AI is used across a range of settings.

Construction. Robots and autonomous machines can take on repetitive or hazardous site tasks such as grinding, painting, tiling and facade work. See our construction robotics.

Industrial and infrastructure. Facilities, plants and infrastructure assets need regular inspection and movement of goods, often in places that are hard or unsafe for people to reach. See industrial and infrastructure robots.

Experience and service. Humanoid and service robots are used in hospitality, events and public-facing spaces for guidance, reception and engagement. See events and hospitality.

Physical AI in the GCC

Governments in the region have made artificial intelligence a national priority, and that sets the context for physical AI.

Qatar’s National AI Strategy focuses on six pillars: education, data access, employment, business, research and ethics (Qatar International Media Office). The UAE Cabinet adopted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031 in April 2019 (UAE Cabinet). Saudi Arabia’s National Strategy for Data and AI was approved in July 2020 and is led by SDAIA (SDAIA).

These strategies are mostly about AI in general. Turning that ambition into robots that do real work on a site in Doha, Abu Dhabi or elsewhere in the region takes local partners who handle sourcing, fit, deployment and support. That is the gap we work in.

How a first physical AI project works

We keep it simple and staged.

  1. Identify. We work out which task is worth automating and whether a robot suits it.
  2. Pilot. You test it on a real task on your own site before committing to a larger purchase. See how pilots run.
  3. Deploy. We install it, set it up and train your team.
  4. Support. We stay on after go-live for maintenance and updates.

Robots can be bought, rented or trialled as a pilot, depending on the job.

What FRWRD Intelligence does

FRWRD Intelligence works between global robotics manufacturers and GCC organisations. We are not the manufacturer. We supply systems and handle deployment, engineering integration, commissioning, training and maintenance for operational work in Qatar, the UAE and the wider GCC, including Doha and Abu Dhabi. The scope is agreed for the selected system and project. Browse the robots we work with.

Frequently asked questions

What is physical AI?

AI that works in the physical world through robots and machines that sense, decide and act.

Is physical AI the same as robotics?

Not quite. Robotics is the machines. Physical AI is the intelligence that lets those machines adapt to real, changing conditions instead of repeating one fixed motion.

What does a robotics pilot involve?

A short, scoped trial of a robot on one real task at your site, so you see how it performs before you commit.

Can robots be rented in the GCC?

Yes. Robots can be bought, rented or trialled as a pilot, depending on the job.

Where do you operate?

FRWRD is based in Abu Dhabi and Doha and serves businesses across the UAE and the wider GCC.
